Bread stick recipe

 Ingredients:
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2-3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional, for flavor)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:

    • In a bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
    • Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
    • Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:

    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if necessary to prevent sticking.
  4. First Rise:

    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Divide and Shape:

    • Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
    • Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each portion into a long rope.
  7. Arrange on Baking Sheet:

    • Place the shaped breadsticks on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between each.
  8. Second Rise:

    • Cover the breadsticks with a kitchen towel and let them rise for an additional 20-30 minutes.
  9. Bake:

    • Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  10. Brush and Season:

    • While the breadsticks are still warm, brush them with melted butter.
    • Optional: Sprinkle garlic powder, dried oregano, and grated Parmesan cheese over the top for added flavor. I usually add Garlic powder and dried Oregano so i suggest when trying to make cheese bread you can add that too with butter.
  11. Serve:

    • Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly before serving. They are delicious on their own or with marinara sauce for dipping.
