Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2-3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional, for flavor)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast:
- In a bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Stir until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if necessary to prevent sticking.
First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Divide and Shape:
- Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
- Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each portion into a long rope.
Arrange on Baking Sheet:
- Place the shaped breadsticks on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between each.
Second Rise:
- Cover the breadsticks with a kitchen towel and let them rise for an additional 20-30 minutes.
Bake:
- Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
Brush and Season:
- While the breadsticks are still warm, brush them with melted butter.
- Optional: Sprinkle garlic powder, dried oregano, and grated Parmesan cheese over the top for added flavor. I usually add Garlic powder and dried Oregano so i suggest when trying to make cheese bread you can add that too with butter.
Serve:
- Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly before serving. They are delicious on their own or with marinara sauce for dipping.
